BSc. Eng. (Chemical) ’72, MDP UNISA ’75, PM Development UNISA ’80, MBL UNISA ’90. This chemical engineer joined Anglo in ’68 as operator on a plant and retired from the same Group in 2010, having served in senior executive positions for the last twelve years and only breaking service while studying on an Anglo bursary. What is even more remarkable is the series of assignments he has had as an independent consultant, since ‘retiring’. His first 18 years post graduate, with inhouse projects and plant operations, laid the foundation for a perfectly scripted and illustrious career. He arrived at Vaal Reefs South Gold Plant when it was being commissioned – an ideal learning experience – and then participated as Project Metallurgist at the beginnings of the Elandsrand Gold Mine Project. In 1980 he became Plant Manager of the new Western Deep Levels Uranium Plant and in ’88 was made General Manager (Metallurgy), responsible for one uranium and four gold process plants on the West Rand. It would be tedious to list all his experiences since then. Suffice it to say that he is an accomplished plant metallurgist, and highly experienced as operations manager and project manager. As general business manager he has proven to be effective at turning around under-performing ventures. Importantly, he takes pride in being a good leader-manager, who believes a leader is only as good as the team that he leads. He is now even more ready ‘to give back’ and to be a mentor of young professionals.
