Short Profile | BCom University of the Free State ’74, HND (Accounting) University of the Free State ’75, BCom Hons RAU ’87. This senior supply chain management professional did not follow a conventional career path to reach that status. He has in fact done a great deal more and has an extraordinary history of procurement and logistics management achievements under difficult circumstances.
He began his career as an Industrial Engineering Officer at Iscor’ Sishen Mine from ’77 to ’82, where materials management studies at the warehouses was only one of his duties. As Work Study Officer until ’84 he was responsible for projects on productivity and methods improvement at Sasol 1, which included optimizing material- and logistics management systems at coal mines. From ’84 to ’86 he was Sasol’s Head of Manpower Planning. From ’86 to 2001 he was with MKTV Tobacco, where he began as HR Manager but became General Manager: Services where logistics management was just one of many responsibilities. Then followed four years as Financial and Project Manager for Tobacco RSA, a not-for-profit organisation, where he drove a small farmer development project - the BEE initiative of the tobacco industry. This included procurement management of all farmer input requisites to establish the crop and materials to improve facilities
The rest of his career was outside SA, beginning with one contract in the UK managing the logistics of rolling out a telecommunications infrastructure to several island countries in the Caribbean. This was followed by eight fixed-term-contract stints as manager of procurement and logistics (under assorted titles} mostly for remote mines all over Africa. His ingenuity and negotiating skills were exploited to the full, yet he takes pride in systematically improving supply chain operations, optimizing inventories and procurement, while ensuring compliance to regulations and conformance with international best practices. He is proficient in many software systems, including SAP MRP (Materials Management), SYSPRO 6.1 and 7.1 (Materials Management), PRONTO Xi (Materials Management, Project Cost Control) and ORB Fusion (Inventory Planning, Procurement Portal).
